They are now being upgraded to provide an upstream path (from the home to the head-end). New challenges arise in using the upstream channel since the available bandwidth is low and the noise levels are high. Di erent variations of the reservation Aloha protocol have been proposed as the MAC protocol to e ciently share the scarce upstream capacity. The e ciency of the reservation protocol highly depends on the capacity assigned to the reservation channel. In this paper we present a control mechanism that dynamically adjusts the operating parameters to the current load on the system. The control mechanism does not require any framing structure and is built around a \sea of mini-slots". The performance under both static and highly dynamic loads is close to optimum. The station implementation remains particularly simple and the downstream control structure is also simple. Results are given here for xed length data units (ATM cells) but the algorithm extends very simply to variable length MAC frames.

The Data Over Cable Service Interface Specifications (DOCSIS) is intended to support IP flows over HFC (Hybrid Fiber/Coax) networks with significantly higher data rates than analog modems and Integrated Service Digital Network (ISDN) links for high quality audio, video and interactive services. To support quality-of-service (QoS) for such applications, it is important for HFC networks to provid...

This paper investigates a multi-mode MAC protocol suite for use in a heterogeneous underwater network. Modems from different manufacturers may employ different physical layers and MAC protocols. If multiple modems operating in the same or overlapping frequency bands are deployed in the same geographic area, they cannot function correctly due to interference. We propose a mechanism to achieve co...

Extensive researches on Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have been performed and many techniques have been developed for the data link (MAC) layer. Most of them assume single-channel MAC protocols. In the usual dense deployment of the sensor networks, single-channel MAC protocols may be deficient because of radio collisions and limited bandwidth. Hence, using multiple channels can significantly ...
